Generator Usage: Safety is your First Priority
date January 17
Portable power generators are used to power all kinds of power tools and equipment on the jobsite. They are also used to provide emergency power to businesses and homes during weather events. During weather related power outages, you can have a little peace of mind by keeping the lights on, keeping the food refrigerated, keeping the heat running, and the ability to receive updates on fully charged smartphones! When using a generator for any situation, safety is a top priority.
Follow these tips for safe and reliable generator operation:
Before operating, check to be sure the generator has been maintained and is in good working order.
Do not operate a generator indoors or in an enclosed area such as a garage where exhaust fumes and the considerable amount of heat produced can cause accidents. Position the generator outside and use a generator specific tent or cover to keep it out of the elements.
When it is time to refuel, turn the generator off and wait for the motor and all other parts to cool first. It is also preferable, to disconnect all appliances before refueling.
Check the wattage of the generator and of all appliances that you want to power with it. Do the necessary calculations to make sure that you will not overload the system.
Ensure that all connected appliances are turned off before you start the generator. If you use an extension cord, it should be heavy-duty, free of cuts, and designed for outdoor use.
Check the voltmeter and the fuel gauge from time to time to confirm that the generator is operating effectively and safely.
Use a carbon monoxide detector inside to alert you if any carbon monoxide comes into the building.
